Class 5

Welcome to Year 5

Dear Parents/Guardians

A warm welcome to all pupils joining Year 5 class after the summer holidays!  I am very excited about teaching you all in 2019-20, as is our class Teaching Assistant, Mrs Hill.  In order to get the maximum out of the opportunities available to your child, we are writing to you to let you know of the topics, subjects and clubs that your child will be doing.

In Year 5, we try to create an exciting, integrated and cross-curricular based learning environment, which encourages the children to link their knowledge and understanding across subjects into other areas.  Here are some highlights:

In Term 1 (Autumn),  a topic approach will be used to teach all subjects.  The children will be learning about the Earth, Moon and Sun and Space in general (Science and Geography) as well as forces. English will be linked to this topic through poetry, Non-Chronological and newspaper reports. Music and Art and Design will also be linked to our Space topic.  The children will be focusing on different types of games, Outdoor Education and Dance in PE.  Our history topic, will focus on life in Tudor times.  We will also be making local links to Cornwall through our ‘Sense of Place’ unit.

In Term 2 (Spring), children will be learning about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings.  In Science they will learn  about properties of materials and changing materials through reactions.  These topics will allow them to write in a variety of genres for English.

In Term 3 (Summer), children will be learning about Animals and habitats in our Science topics.  They will also focus on the Ancient Greeks in our History topic.

Reading Practice:

Being able to read confidently is the key to enjoying and achieving at school. It is absolutely vital that your child reads at home every day in order to make the maximum progress possible at school!  We will listen to your child read with an adult individually or in a group at least twice each week.  We will also be monitoring reading record books to ensure that children are reading at home and hope that year 5 will have the highest percentages.

Writing Practice and Maths:

All spellings will be set on a Friday and tested the following Friday.  All other writing practice (comprehension, English and Mathematics) will be given out on a Monday.  The homework will need to be handed in on Friday (at the latest).

Extra-Curricular Clubs:

Your child will be able to sign up for a wide variety of lunch-time and after-school clubs.  There are a limited number of places so children will need to sign up promptly.

Physical Education (PE):

Your child will need a suitable PE kit (ie: shorts, t-shirt, trainers, tracksuit for the winter months) so they can safely take part in weekly physical exercise opportunities.  Our Year 5 PE lessons will be on a Wednesday, however there may be occasions where PE is moved, so please ensure your child has their PE kit in school each week.

Routines and Procedures:

The school day starts at 8:55 am, however, children are able to enter the school from 8:45am where they will receive additional reading and maths support.  All children meet on the main playground and are brought into school by an adult. Children leave school at 3:15 pm and must leave by the top gate.

I’m sure you are aware of how precious your child’s education is.  For this reason it is your responsibility to ensure that your child arrives at school on time everyday, in order for them to achieve their full potential.

It would also be very helpful if you could write your child’s name on their school uniform, PE kit, dinner money purses (or on an envelope).

Other important information:

Please ensure that your child always has a coat in school.  Any medication for your child must be given to an adult in the class and a form must be filled in with detailed instructions for its storage and administration.  The forms are kept in the Reception area with Mrs Rowe.  Inhalers can be stored in the classroom and they too must be clearly labelled with your child’s name.
